WASHINGTON: Pakistan’s Ambassador in Washington Asad Majeed Khan has urged the US and the international community to “do more” to pressure India to end its militarised curfew over occupied Kashmir.

In an interview with The Washington Times, Khan said the Indian prime minister has turned a vast section of the disputed region into “a concentration camp.”

He added that millions of people inside the occupied territory have been on lockdown without access to medicine or electricity, let alone telephones and internet, for nearly a month since the government of India revoked the area’s special constitutional status.

“Thousands are being put in prison,” he was quoted as saying. “The world needs to be aware of this.”

Meanwhile, Azad Jammu and Kashmir Prime Minister Raja Farooq Haider Khan who is on a visit to Washington sought to promote the same message.

He told The Washington Times that he wanted “to give a wake-up call to the United States that [it] should intervene immediately.”

Asad Majeed Khan has said India’s actions in occupied Kashmir posed a great threat to regional peace and stability, ARY News reported on August 25.

This he stated while addressing an event related to Pakistan’s Independence Day, attended by Pakistani diaspora in large number to show solidarity with Kashmir.

Majeed said the Narendra Modi-led government had held nine million Kashmiris hostage with its ongoing clampdown in the occupied valley and called on the world to break its silence on the grave situation.

India’s coronavirus cases rise by a daily record of 55,078

BENGALURU: India reported another record surge in daily COVID-19 cases on Friday, taking the total to 1.64 million, as the government further eases virus curbs in a bid to resuscitate the economy, while also trying to increase testing. Infections jumped by 55,078 in the past 24 hours, while the death toll rose by 779 to 35,747, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said on its website. The ministry also said it aimed to raise the country’s capacity to 1 million coronavirus tests per day in the medium term, from a record 600,000 on Friday. The federal government this week announced the reopening of yoga institutes and gymnasiums, and removed restrictions on the movement of people and goods.
