Meet Pakistan’s highest tax paying politician

A quick look into nomination papers submitted to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for 2018 general elections reveals an interesting detail i.e. about the taxes the electoral hopefuls pay. Amongst the uber-rich paying next to nothing in taxes and the richest candidate paying not a single rupee in tax, the man who turns out to be the highest tax-payer is no political heavyweight. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)’s Najeeb Haroon, a relatively lesser known political figure, has paid more than Rs86 million in taxes during the year 2015 and Rs134 million (0.134 billion) in the year 2017.     “I am an engineer by profession and working in construction industry since last 31 years, I have been contributing to the national exchequer (through taxes), when Imran Khan formed PTI, he also urged wealthy and affluent Pakistanis to pay their taxes in full so their underprivileged country men can enjoy its benefits,” Najeeb Haroon told ARY News when asked about his tax record. Magnificent Mbappe leaves Messi in his wake

KAZAN: The notion of a supremely talented number 10 carrying an entire team on his back through to the World Cup quarter-finals figured heavily ahead of France’s game with Argentina, but it was Kylian Mbappe — and not Lionel Messi — who made the difference on Saturday. The 19-year-old ravaged Argentina from start to finish in France’s thrilling 4-3 win in Kazan and the South Americans’ only recourse to halt his lethal bursts forward was to take turns in fouling him. By the end, they were powerless to stop Mbappe, who restored France’s lead midway through the second half with a clever low shot and sealed the win — and Messi’s fate — four minutes later, with a ruthless strike into the bottom corner of the net as France again ripped open their opponents’ fragile defence on the break. Mbappe, rather like France as a whole, had not really got going in the tournament until the game against Argentina, with French media saying he was so angry after his insipid display against Australia in

Drake on course to smash streaming records with ‘Scorpion’

LOS ANGELES: Canadian rapper Drake, the world’s best-selling artist of 2016, looked on course to set records tumbling again on Friday with his soul-baring new album “Scorpion,” in which he reveals he is a father. Spotify said the album was streaming at an average rate of 10 million times an hour on Friday, while Apple Music said “Scorpion” was the No. 1 streamed album in 92 countries. On the 25-track double album, Drake, 31, confirms long-standing rumours that he has fathered a son, but does not name the mother. “Single father, I hate when I hear it,” he raps on the final track “March 14.” The album also features collaborations with Jay-Z, Nicki Minaj, Ty Dolla Sign, and posthumous vocals by Michael Jackson. “Scorpion” follows Drake’s best-selling 2016 album “Views” and his 2017 release “More Life,” which set a record across all music streaming services of 385 million streams in its first week of release. The Recording Industry Association of America said on Friday that Drake h

Mbappe double leads France past Argentina in 4-3 thriller

KAZAN, RUSSIA: Teenager Kylian Mbappe scored two goals in four minutes to send a youthful France charging into the World Cup quarter-finals with a thrilling 4-3 win over Argentina on Saturday that sent Lionel Messi’s team home. The 19-year-old forward’s electric pace caused Argentina problems all afternoon and his twin strikes helped France overturn a 2-1 deficit at the Kazan Arena as they set up a meeting with Uruguay or Portugal, who play later on Saturday. Messi provided assists for two goals but the 31-year-old was otherwise subdued in the “false nine” role and his fourth, and possibly final, crack at winning the World Cup was destined to end in disappointment. While Mbappe was the most influential player on the pitch, Argentina winger Angel Di Maria and France full back Benjamin Pavard fought out a private contest for the best goal of the match with two magnificent long-range strikes. Di Maria’s goal cancelled out Antoine Griezmann’s early penalty for France just before the

Thousands of Palestinians attend funeral of 11-year-old boy killed by Israeli forces

GAZA CITY: Thousands of Palestinians on Saturday attended the funeral of the 11-year-old son of a Hamas military commander killed by Israeli fire in the southern Gaza Strip, with mourners demanding revenge. Senior members of Hamas, which rules the blockaded Gaza Strip, and commanders of its Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades attended the funeral. “Yasser’s martyrdom is clear proof of the crimes committed by the (Israeli) occupation against the Palestinian people,” said senior Hamas official Khalil al-Hayya during the ceremony. “The occupiers killed the child in cold blood,” said Hayya, a member of the Islamist Palestinian group’s political bureau. Pakistan decries selective observance of international obligations

NEW YORK: At the United Nations, Pakistan has decried double standards in implementation of international obligations to protect civilians and prevent crimes against humanity. This ‘selectivity’ has meant that egregious crimes, including killings and mass blinding claim innocent victims in Indian-occupied Kashmir, are commuted in full view of the international community, Pakistan’s Ambassador to the UN, Maleeha Lodhi said while speaking in the General Assembly debate on responsibility to protect and prevent crimes against humanity. “The tragic victims in occupied Jammu and Kashmir suffer the further indignity of living under an illegal occupation”, she declared. She also referred to the grave situation in Palestine where the failure of the international community to uphold these norms, has been what she called “most manifest and telling.” As the killing fields of Gaza were drenched in the blood of over 130 innocent Palestinians, including countless women and children, Ms. Lodhi sa

Egypt’s Sisi, facing online backlash, says country is on the ‘right track’

CAIRO: President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said on Saturday Egypt was on the “right track” to rebuild its economy after years of instability that had nearly brought the country to its knees. Speaking on the anniversary of 2013 mass protests that helped propel him into power, Sisi said Egypt had faced challenges, including political instability, armed insurgency and an economic meltdown since 2011 protests forced President Hosni Mubarak from power after more than 30 years in office. “I tell you in all objectivity, every Egyptian man and woman is entitled to feel proud for what his country has achieved in facing the three challenges, and in record time,” Sisi said in a televised speech. Sisi, who was elected for a second term in March, has been pushing ahead with economic reforms required under a three-year, $12 billion IMF loan that have left many of Egypt’s 100 million people struggling to make ends meet. Spurred by the painful reforms, an online campaign calling for Sisi to step down

MOSCOW: An Indian soccer fan, in Russia for the World Cup, died in a car crash on Saturday on a road near the tournament host city Sochi, Interfax news agency cited sources as saying. Iran’s leaders seek ways to defend economy from US sanctions

DUBAI: Iran is studying ways to keep exporting oil and other measures to counter US economic sanctions, state news agency IRNA reported on Saturday. Since last month, when US President Donald Trump pulled out of the nuclear which lifted most sanctions in 2015, the rial currency has dropped up to 40 percent in value, prompting angry protests by bazaar traders usually loyal to the Islamist rulers. Speaking after three days of protests, Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said the US sanctions were aimed at turning Iranians against their government. “They bring to bear economic pressure to separate the nation from the system … but six US presidents before him (Trump) tried this and had to give up,” Khamenei said on his website Khamenei.ir. With the return of US sanctions likely to make it increasingly difficult to access the global financial system, President Hassan Rouhani has met with the head of parliament and the judiciary to discuss counter-measures. Free-scoring Belgium target 16 goals to get free TVs

MOSCOW: Belgium scored nine goals in their three World Cup group games, more than any other country, and forward Dries Mertens said on Saturday he was motivated by more than just winning the trophy. Mertens, scorer of an outrageous volley against Panama that opened Belgium’s account in Russia, joked that friends back home were counting on him to help the team hit a target of 16 goals to make good on a retailer’s special World Cup promotion. Asked by reporters at their training camp near Moscow about Belgium’s free-scoring run, the Napoli player noted that a Belgian electrical chain was offering to reimburse people who bought a TV for the World Cup — if the team score more than 15. “My friends bought the television. So I’m thinking about that. So I want to score a lot of goals to give a free television to my friends,” he declared ahead of Belgium’s last 16 clash with Japan on Monday. Trump says Saudi king agreed to raise oil production up to 2 million barrels

WASHINGTON: U.S. President Donald Trump said in a tweet on Saturday that Saudi Arabia’s King Salman had agreed to his request to increase oil production “maybe up to 2,000,000 barrels” to offset production from Iran and Venezuela. Saudi authorities had no immediate comment. The world’s top oil exporter plans to pump as much as 11 million barrels of oil per day (bpd) in July, an oil industry source told Reuters this week, after OPEC agreed with Russia and other oil producers to raise output by about 1 million bpd. Trump tweeted: “Just spoke to King Salman of Saudi Arabia and explained to him that, because of the turmoil & disfunction in Iran and Venezuela, I am asking that Saudi Arabia increase oil production, maybe up to 2,000,000 barrels, to make up the difference … Prices to high! He has agreed!” The Trump administration is pushing countries to cut all imports of Iranian oil from November when the United States re-imposes sanctions against Tehran, after Trump withdrew from

Angry voter confronts PTI’s Arif Alvi during election campaign

KARACHI: Several politicians across the country are facing hostile public while visiting their constituencies during the ongoing election campaign. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader Arif Alvi found himself in a similar situation while campaigning in the NA-247 constituency. Alvi, who is also the party’s Sindh president, was elected from the constituency in 2013 general elections. An angry resident confronted him asking the lawmaker has done for the year, and is visiting after five years to seek vote. “Do you recognise me, you even gave me a certificate,” asked the voter as Alvi replied in the affirmative. “Then why are you visiting after five years? What have you done for us?” he asked angrily. Alvi attempted to convince him, but was unable to answer the acrid questions and moved away continuing on with his campaign. NA-247 lies in Karachi south and includes several posh localities such as Clifton and Defence Housing Autority. However, the area faces several issues such as an acut

Rape of seven-year-old girl sparks angry protests in India

MUMBAI: Thousands of people took to the streets in central India this week demanding the death penalty for assailants who raped a seven-year-old girl lured away from school as she waited to be picked up by her parents. Two men have been arrested for the crime in the city of Mandsaur, police said. The victim was hospitalised but is recovering, doctors said. Following rise in rape cases across the country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government introduced the death penalty for rape of girls under 12 and increased the minimum punishment for those whose victims were under 16, after the rapes of an eight-year-old girl and a young woman in two states ruled by his party earlier this year led to public protests. There were 40,000 rapes reported in India in 2016 and the victims were children in 40 percent of those cases. Every day, newspapers carry fresh stories of sexual violence against women. In Mandsaur, the girl was waiting to be picked up from school by her parents, who were runn
