Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt reach child custody agreement: lawyer

LOS ANGELES: Divorcing Hollywood power couple Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have reached a final agreement over the custody of their six children, Jolie’s lawyer said on Friday, after more than two years of often bitter negotiations. “A custody arrangement was agreed to weeks ago, and has been signed by both parties and the judge,” Jolie’s lawyer Samantha Bley DeJean said in a statement to Reuters. “The agreement, which is based on the recommendations of the child custody evaluator, eliminates the need for a trial. The filing and details of the agreement are confidential to protect the best interests of the children.” Representatives of Pitt had no immediate comment. Microsoft’s market value overtakes Apple’s to close out week

SAN FRANCISCO: Microsoft Corp’s stock market value closed above Apple Inc’s for the first time in eight years on Friday as the Windows maker benefited from growth in cloud computing while Apple was hit by investor concern about iPhone demand. Shares of Microsoft rose 0.6 percent to end the week at $110.89, putting its market capitalization at $851.2 billion. Apple shares fell 0.5 percent to $178.58 on the day, adding up to a market value of $847.4 billion. The two stocks jostled for the top spot over the course of the week, with Microsoft’s stock market value exceeding Apple’s at several points in intra-day trading but not at the close. Both companies’ market capitalizations were calculated using outstanding shares reported in their most recent 10-Q filings. Cold and dry weather prevails in most parts of Pakistan

KARACHI: The mercury goes down by six degrees Celsius in Skardu, as a cold and dry weather spell reported in most parts of the country. Skardu reported the coldest place in the country with minus six degree temperature. Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) had forecast mainly cold and dry weather on Wednesday. The dry and cold weather will continue for a few days, weather pundits said. The temperature in Quetta also dropped to the freezing point, while the mountainous regions received light rain and snowfall. WASHINGTON: The Pan-American Health Organization on Friday reported a big jump in measles cases in the Americas this year, with Brazil surpassing crisis-hit Venezuela as the nation with the most confirmed cases. As of November 30, the region has seen 16,766 confirmed cases — but more than half of those have been reported in the last month, the UN agency said in its regular update on the situation. Brazil now has nearly 10,000 confirmed cases — but more than three-quarters of them were reported since last month. The vast majority of cases have been reported in Amazonas state, the PAHO said. Thirteen people have died of measles in the vast South American country. NAB arrests SSP Rai Ijaz over corruption charges

KARACHI: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Friday arrested Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Rai Ijaz Ahmad over corruption charges, ARY News reported.  According to reports, Sindh police’s top cop was detained from Shahrahe Faisal area of the metropolis. Ijaz, who is former Lahore chief traffic officer (CTO), is facing charges of misappropriation of Rs700 million in the police funds while he was posted in Punjab, NAB said in its statement. “More arrests to follow after Rai Ijaz’s detention in the scam”, said NAB’s spokesperson. ALASKA: A powerful earthquake shook southern Alaska on Friday, prompting a tsunami warning for Cook Inlet and disrupting traffic and television transmissions in its largest city. The 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck just south of Point MacKenzie, Alaska, with an epicenter seven miles (11.4 km) from Anchorage, the U.S. Geological Survey said. It had a depth of 26.7 miles (43 km). The National Weather Service initially said there was no tsunami danger, but a few minutes later the agency said on Twitter that there was a warning in place for Cook Inlet, which links Anchorage with the Gulf of Alaska. There were no initial reports of any damage or injuries. Traffic in midtown Anchorage came to a standstill after the quake and CNN reported that television station KTUU, an NBC affiliate, was knocked off the air. According to the notification issued on Friday, the Sindh Chief Minister will be the chairman and health and population minister will be the cice-chairman of the task force. WHO says spread of polio remains international health emergency

LONDON: The spread of polio must still be classified as a public health emergency because, while progress has been made towards wiping out the disease, that progress is fragile, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Friday. “We are so close to the elimination of polio, but we have to use all of our international tools to achieve this end,” Helen Rees, chair of the WHO’s international emergency committee, told reporters on a telephone briefing. “The ongoing situation continues to require that a public health emergency of international concern should be applied.” Latest WHO figures show there have been 27 cases of wild polio so far in 2018 – all of them in Pakistan and Afghanistan where the contagious viral disease is endemic. Three fragments of rocks retrieved from the moon by a Soviet space mission in 1970 were sold for $855,000 at a New York auction on Thursday. Sotheby’s auction house said the “moon rocks” are the only known documented lunar matter in private hands. They were offered for sale by an unidentified private American collector who purchased them at auction in 1993 for $442,500. Sotheby’s said the buyer on Thursday was another private American collector, but the name was not disclosed. FIA nabs man involved in child pornography

KARACHI: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on Friday arrested a suspect involved in child pornography after registering a case against him. The FIA Cybercrime Circle registered the first case involving child pornography on a complaint lodged by a citizen,Khalid and subsequently nabbed accused Hamza from a Karachi neighbourhood. According to a FIA spokesperson, the accused was involved in sexually harassing children by uploading their immoral pictures and videos on the internet. He is also accused of blackmailing children to extort money. Objectionable photos and videos were seized from the possession of the accused. During his interrogation, about 10 victim children aging between 10 and 13 came to surface, said the FIA spokesperson. He said efforts are underway to arrest other accused involved in such felony following information provided by the arrested accused. Marriott’s Starwood database hacked, 500 million may be affected

Marriott International said on Friday that hackers accessed about 500 million records in its Starwood Hotels reservation system in an attack that began four years ago, exposing personal data of customers including some payment card numbers. Shares fell 5 percent after disclosure of the hack, one of the largest in history, which prompted regulators in Britain and at least three US states to announce plans to look into the attack. The hack began in 2014, before Marriott offered to buy Starwood for $12.2 billion in November 2015, acquiring brands including Sheraton, Ritz Carlton and Westin to create the world’s largest hotel operator. The company closed the Starwood deal in September 2016. Passport details, phone numbers and email addresses of some 327 million Marriott customers were exposed, according to the company. KARACHI: Police on Friday recovered an 11-year-old boy from Cantt station, who was abducted from his hometown last month and recover a kidnapper.      Speaking at a press conference, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Pir Mohammad Shah said that a  police party on a tipoff conducted raid at the Karachi cantonment railway station and recovered the child, who was kidnapped from Korangi last month. He said that the 11-year-old child, Sheraz, was kidnapped from Zia Colony area of Korangi on October 23 and added that the suspect was identified as Raja Muj. Facebook Inc’s Instagram said on Friday it launched a new feature dubbed “Close Friends” allowing users to share their stories with a smaller group of people. PM Imran gives one week deadline for legislation against money laundering

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan on Friday gave one week dead line to concerned authorities to finalize a new legislation to effectively deal with the offences related to money laundering. Chairing a high level meeting at his office, PM Imran also directed to further strengthen the existing laws to effectively check hawala hundi and other illegal practices that were negatively impacting the economy of the country. According to a statement released from the ministry, he also approved a package to further incentivize remittance through legal channels. SRINAGAR: Chairman of Hurriyat Forum Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has asked the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to give peace a real chance by positively responding to his Pakistani counterpart Imran Khan’s repeated offers of engagement. Addressing a Friday congregation at Jamia Masjid in Srinagar, occupied Kashmir , Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said, “Narendra Modi should positively respond to Imran Khan’s repeated offers of engagement so that both could build trust and give peace a real chance.” He said that military approach to issues could never succeed but human approach to them as witnessed in the opening of Kartarpur Corridor was the best way forward. Two MNAs offloaded from flight at Bacha Khan Airport

PESHAWAR: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on Friday offloaded two members of National Assembly, belonging to the tribal areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, from a flight at Bacha Khan International Airport, ARY News reported. According to ARY News reporter, FIA offloaded the two legislators Mohsin Dawar and  Ali Wazir from a Bahrain-bound international flight at the Bacha Khan airport when they were trying to flee abroad.    Sources said that the two legislators were stopped at the airport as their names were placed on the exit control list. According to unconfirmed report the two MNAs were taken into custody for investigations. Govt inks MoU with Swiss authorities to ‘bring back looted money’

ISLAMABAD: The federal government on Friday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Swiss authorities to obtain information about assets and bank accounts owned by Pakistanis in Switzerland. Karachi: Student ‘tortured’ by school teacher seeks justice

KARACHI: Parents of a 12-year-old student are moving from pillar to post to get “justice” for their child who they claim was brutally tortured by one of his teachers at a private school.  Shahmir, a student of grade eight in Karachi’s Aisha Bawany School, claims that on November 16, his teacher used a cane to beat him resulting in severe injuries on his hand and head but police has not even registered a First Information Report (FIR) regarding the incident.
