Researchers make major breakthrough in COVID-19 vaccine search

Scientists in Australia have made a major breakthrough in the search for a Covid-19 vaccine saying their drug can neutralise the deadly virus. Researchers at the University of Queensland (UQ) are conducting a trial of the experimental vaccine which they say is generating immunity levels higher than in recovered coronavirus patients. The vaccine will go into human trials once the final results from the pre-clinical tests arrive in early June. “This is what we were hoping for, and it’s a great relief for the team given the tremendous faith placed in our technology by CEPI (Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovation), federal and Queensland governments and our philanthropic partners,” Prof Young said in a statement. Reinvent the reel: Hollywood mulls new measures to restart shooting

Movie moguls, directors and lawyers are searching for radical solutions to reopen Hollywood as soundstages gather dust and studio profits slide weeks after cameras stopped rolling due to coronavirus. The film industry has been on lockdown in California since mid-March following strict stay-at-home orders, with movie and television shoots particularly exposed to the pandemic because of the large casts and crews required. But even as politicians mull a gradual easing of restrictions, insiders say Tinseltown’s sky-high costs — and liabilities — mean filmmaking could look very different to what came before, and be many months away. “It’s impossible to make a ‘Star Wars’ or a Marvel movie tomorrow morning,” said Nicolas Chartier, Oscar-winning producer of The Hurt Locker. “Logically, there’s too much liability and there’s too much fear,” agreed fellow producer Stephen Nemeth ( Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. ) “I can’t see a movie like ‘Dune’ getting produced now. In London, health minister Matt Hancock on Tuesday spoke of “early signs that in rare cases, there is an impact of an auto-immune response in children that causes a significant disease. “It’s a new disease that we think may be caused by coronavirus and the COVID-19 virus.” But he said that while some of the children who have it tested positive for the virus, others did not. Oscars to admit streamed films next year as coronavirus upends movie going

LOS ANGELES: The organizers of the Oscars said on Tuesday that films released only on streaming platforms or video on demand while movie theatres are closed due to the coronavirus pandemic would be eligible for Academy Awards next year. The temporary change, which will apply only for next year’s Oscars and will lapse when movie theatres reopen across the nation, was announced in a statement by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Previously, a movie had to be screened in a movie theatre in Los Angeles for at least seven days in order to be eligible for Oscar consideration. “The Academy firmly believes there is no greater way to experience the magic of movies than to see them in a theater. Our commitment to that is unchanged and unwavering. Nonetheless, the historically tragic COVID-19 pandemic necessitates this temporary exception to our awards eligibility rules,” President David Rubin and Chief Executive Dawn Hudson said, referring to the disease caused by the virus.
