Stop adding THC to e-cigarettes: health authorities

Americans who use e-cigarettes should avoid adding substances like cannabis and buying products off the street — or consider refraining altogether — while authorities investigate hundreds of cases of severe lung disease among vapers, health officials said Friday. A total of 215 possible cases of pulmonary illness associated with vaping from 25 states are currently being probed, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said in an update. The first death was reported last week, but most patients have recovered fully. “CDC recommends that, while the investigation is ongoing, Americans who use e-cigarettes and are concerned about these specific, potential risks of illness should consider refraining from their use, and should not buy them off the street or modify them or add substances in ways not intended by the manufacturer,” the agency said. It singled out “e-cigarette products with THC or other cannabinoids” as a common modification. Starting from late June, patients ha

Agents raid illegal miners in Amazon as environmental enforcement ratchets up

ALTAMIRA: Federal agents in Brazil exchanged gunfire with illegal miners in the Amazon state of Para on Friday, according to Reuters witnesses, in a dramatic example of how Brazil has stepped up environmental enforcement in the wake of rainforest fires. Federal police and agents with environmental enforcement agency Ibama were carrying out a raid on illegal wildcat miners near the Ituna/Itatá indigenous reserve, which crosses into several municipalities including the city of Altamira, according to two Reuters witnesses. “They (the miners) hid in the forest and shot at the team,” said Hugo Loss, Ibama’s national coordinator of enforcement operations, who accompanied the mission. Tesla cars to be exempted from purchase tax

BEIJING: China will exempt Tesla’s electric vehicles from its purchase tax, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) said on Friday, a concession made amidst trade tensions with the United States. Tesla sees China as one of its most important, growing markets, and the exemption from a 10% purchase tax could reduce the cost of buying a Tesla by up to 99,000 yuan ($13,957.82), according to a post on Tesla’s social media WeChat account. Sixteen variants – all the Tesla models sold in the country – are listed on a document issued by MIIT on its website, including Model S, X and 3. No reason was given for the decision to exclude the cars from the tax, but it comes as Tesla is expanding in China, with a new factory and visits by Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk. Tesla’s plant in Shanghai will be its first overseas factory, and the company is gearing up for a major Chinese sales push by promoting racing events, showroom parties with DJs and a line of Chinese Tesla stic

Twitter CEO’s account gets hacked, sends racist tweets

SAN FRANCISCO: The account of Twitter Chief Executive Jack Dorsey was hacked on Friday afternoon, sending public tweets and retweets including racial slurs and curse words to 4 million followers before Twitter secured the account. The social media company, co-founded by Dorsey, said the phone number associated with his account was compromised due to a security oversight by the mobile provider. “This allowed an unauthorized person to compose and send tweets via text message from the phone number. That issue is now resolved,” the company said, adding separately that there was no indication that Twitter’s systems had been compromised. One of the tweets from the hacked account said Nazi leader Adolf Hitler was innocent, while others contained derogatory comments about black people and Jews. There was also a tweet suggesting there was a bomb at Twitter’s headquarters. The account posted a hashtag that was used during the apparent hacks of several YouTube stars last week. The hack unde

Kristen Stewart aims to shine spotlight on Jean Seberg

VENICE: Forty years after actress Jean Seberg died, Kristin Stewart says she wants to show the world that the star of the French New Wave should be known for more than just her short haircut. The 29-year-old plays the actress in a political thriller detailing how the FBI targeted Seberg in the late 1960s because of her personal and political links to African American civil rights activist Hakim Jamal. Seberg began her career as a teenager, portraying Joan of Arc in Otto Preminger’s “Saint. Joan”. But it was her role in Jean-Luc Godard’s “Breathless” in 1960 that turned her in a French New Wave star. The film titled “Seberg” starts with her meeting Jamal, played by Anthony Mackie, on a plane. FBI agents, played by Jack O’Connell and Vince Vaughn, tap her home as they seek to expose the affair and discredit the actress. The film, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival on Friday in an out-of-competition screening, follows Seberg’s realization that she is being watched and the i

Google to pay out $150-200m over YouTube privacy claims

Google will pay $150-200 million to settle allegations YouTube violated a children’s privacy law while gathering data to better target its adverts, US media reports said Friday. The US Federal Trade Commission agreed on the amount of the settlement against YouTube parent Google, which if approved by the Justice Department would be the largest settlement in a case involving children’s privacy, the New York Times reported. The allegations against YouTube were made by privacy groups who said the platform had violated laws protecting children’s privacy by gathering data on users under the age of 13 without obtaining permission from parents, Politico reported. The FTC is expected to announce its decision on the settlement in September, the New York Times said. US regulators have long argued Google fails to protect children from harmful content and data collection on its YouTube platform. Advocacy group The Center for Digital Democracy said in a statement that the proposed settlement w

1.9 mn people lose citizenship in India’s Assam; Muslims’ mass deportations feared

GUWAHATI: Almost two million people in northeast India were left facing statelessness on Saturday after the state of Assam published a citizenship list aimed at weeding out “foreign infiltrators”, in a process the central government wants to replicate nationwide. A total of 31.1 million people were included in a final National Register of Citizens (NRC), but 1.9 million were deemed ineligible, according to a statement from the Assam government. Most of those excluded were expected to be Muslim. Assam, an impoverished isolated state of 33 million, has long seen large influxes from elsewhere, including under British colonial rule and around Bangladesh´s 1971 war of independence when millions fled into India. For decades this has made Assam a hotbed of inter-religious and ethnic tensions. Sporadic violence has included the 1983 massacre of around 2,000 people. This has led to pressure from those who see themselves as genuine Assamese for a lasting solution — which they hope will come
