KARACHI: Mayor Karachi Waseem Akhtar on Tuesday said the funds given by the Sindh government were spent on salaries and pensions of the local government employees only, ARY News reported.

“The Sindh government has destroyed entire province including Larkana,” Waseem Akhtar blamed while talking to media in Karachi.

He said he had brought Rs25 billion package for Karachi from the previous federal government for the projects of Five Star Chowrangi, KDA Chowrangi and Nagan Chowrangi. While, he said, the Sindh government had distributed contracts only.

The mayor said he had made work in every district of the metropolis. He also relayed press that the Karachi mayor could not give project worth more than 25 million rupees. He rued that the provincial government was seeking revenue generation from the local government.

He said the provincial government was seeking hospitals of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, while condition of their own hospitals was dilapidated.

On April 8, Mayor Karachi Waseem Akhtar had vowed to touch up different parks across the metropolis.

“We are working on Hill Park, while parks of different union councils will also be enhanced,” Waseem Akhtar had said adding that the local government would soon open Jheel Park after renovation.

India’s coronavirus cases rise by a daily record of 55,078

BENGALURU: India reported another record surge in daily COVID-19 cases on Friday, taking the total to 1.64 million, as the government further eases virus curbs in a bid to resuscitate the economy, while also trying to increase testing. Infections jumped by 55,078 in the past 24 hours, while the death toll rose by 779 to 35,747, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said on its website. The ministry also said it aimed to raise the country’s capacity to 1 million coronavirus tests per day in the medium term, from a record 600,000 on Friday. The federal government this week announced the reopening of yoga institutes and gymnasiums, and removed restrictions on the movement of people and goods.
