Vote count underway for PP-128 by-poll in Multan

MULTAN: The counting of votes is currently underway after the polling process for Multan’s PP-128 seat ended peacefully in the constituency, ARY News reported.  

The polling process commenced at 8am today and ended at 5pm without any break at the 138 polling stations in the constituency.

32 polling stations were declared sensitive and at least one thousand law enforcement personnel were deployed around them.

The Punjab Assembly seat fell vacant after the death of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) MPA Mazhar Abbas Raan.

Major contenders vying for the seat are Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) Malik Wasif Mazhar Raan, Pakistan People’s Party’s (PPP) Malik Muhammad Arshad.

Malik Shahid Abbas Raan, Muhammad Tufail, Muhammad Ramzan and Muhammad Israr-Ul-Haq Cheema are contesting elections as independent candidates.

Earlier in the day, polling for by-election in Multan’s PP-218 had  begun amid tight security,

The polling started at 8am and will continue till 5pm without any break. The Punjab Assembly seat fell vacant after the death of PTI MPA Mazhar Abbas Raan.

MPA Malik Mazhar Abbas Raan had got 45,817 votes in the July 2018 general elections while PPP candidate Malik Muhammad Abbas bagged 37,417 votes and PML-N’s Zaffar Ahmed had secured 25,000 votes.

As many as 138 polling stations, including 25 for males, 24 for females and 89 combined, will be set up in the constituency. The polling stations have been divided into three categories, including 32 in category A, 48 in B and 58 polling stations have been put in category C.

A total of 203,188 voters, including 111,918 males and 91,270 females, will elect their representative to the Punjab Assembly. The ECP would set up 455 polling booths, including 246 for males and 209 for females.

India’s coronavirus cases rise by a daily record of 55,078

BENGALURU: India reported another record surge in daily COVID-19 cases on Friday, taking the total to 1.64 million, as the government further eases virus curbs in a bid to resuscitate the economy, while also trying to increase testing. Infections jumped by 55,078 in the past 24 hours, while the death toll rose by 779 to 35,747, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said on its website. The ministry also said it aimed to raise the country’s capacity to 1 million coronavirus tests per day in the medium term, from a record 600,000 on Friday. The federal government this week announced the reopening of yoga institutes and gymnasiums, and removed restrictions on the movement of people and goods.
