IHC terms Ali Jahangir’s appointment as envoy to US as ‘shameful’

ISLAMABAD: Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Thursday heard the case against Ali Jahangir’s appointment as Pakistan’s ambassador to the United States and dubbed the government’s decision of opting him for the post as ‘shameful’.

Justice Athar Minallah, while hearing the case against Ali Jahangir, lashed out at the government and questioned Attorney General Ashtar Ausaf “whether Ali Jahangir’s appointment is a disgraceful act for the country or not?”

The Attorney General stated that there are no doubts about the court’s reservations. Justice Minallah further remarked, “It would have been better if Ali Jahangir had rejected the offer of government owing to his embezzlement charges.”

The court expressed its concerns about the image of Pakistan following Ali Jahangir’s appointment.

“The issue is sensitive and interim government cannot decide on the matter, let new government take charge,” the court observed and adjourned the hearing until October 4.

Ali Jahangir Siddiqui on Tuesday assumed charge of Pakistan’s new ambassador to the United States and replaced Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry.

Siddiqui is also facing a National Accountability Bureau (NAB) inquiry for allegedly causing a loss of Rs 40 billion to the national exchequer through embezzlement.

On the other hand, NAB has approach Sindh High Court (SHC) in order to place Ali Jahangir on Exit Control List (ECL). The court observed that Ali Jahangir will have to appear before the court whenever NAB summons him.

India’s coronavirus cases rise by a daily record of 55,078

BENGALURU: India reported another record surge in daily COVID-19 cases on Friday, taking the total to 1.64 million, as the government further eases virus curbs in a bid to resuscitate the economy, while also trying to increase testing. Infections jumped by 55,078 in the past 24 hours, while the death toll rose by 779 to 35,747, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said on its website. The ministry also said it aimed to raise the country’s capacity to 1 million coronavirus tests per day in the medium term, from a record 600,000 on Friday. The federal government this week announced the reopening of yoga institutes and gymnasiums, and removed restrictions on the movement of people and goods.
